Enable Your Browser to Accept Cookies

General Technical Information and Help

To enable your browser to accept cookies, click your browser in the list below and follow the instructions.

Note: When cookies first appeared they were regarded with a great deal of suspicion, but they are actually very safe - they are not viruses, worms or any other type of 'malware', so you can feel perfectly safe in allowing your browser to accept them.

Internet Explorer 6 & 7 (Windows)

  1. Find the Tools menu: in IE6 it's in the menu bar at the top of the window, between Favorites and Help; in IE7 it's at the right hand end of the toolbar, just below the Live Search box.
  2. Select Internet Options, at the bottom of the Tools menu.
  3. Select the Privacy tab.
  4. Click the Advanced button in the middle of the window.
  5. Turn on Override automatic cookie handling.
  6. Click Accept under both First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies.
  7. Turn on Always allow session cookies.
  8. Click OK, then OK again.
  9. Exit Internet Explorer and restart the browser.

AOL 8 & 9

  1. Click the AOL Settings icon near the top of the window.
  2. AOL 8:
    1. Select Preferences from the menu that appears.
    2. Click the By Category tab.
    3. Find Internet in the listings.
    AOL 9:
  3. Follow steps 3 to 7 for Internet Explorer, above.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Apply, then OK again.
  6. Exit AOL and restart your computer (don't skip this step!)

If this doesn't work for you in AOL's own browser, minimise the window and use another browser - ideally not Internet Explorer but, say, Firefox or Opera.

Firefox (all versions)

  1. Find the Tools menu (Windows) or the Firefox menu (Mac).
  2. Select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac).
  3. Click the Privacy icon at the top of the window that opens.
  4. Look in the Cookies section of the window (version 2.x) or click the Cookies tab (version 1.x).
  5. Turn on Accept cookies from sites or Allow sites to set cookies.
  6. Click OK (Windows) or just close the window (Mac). There's no need to restart the browser.

Safari (Mac OS X)

  1. Find the Safari menu.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Next to Accept cookies: select either Always or Only from sites you navigate to.
  5. Close the window.

Opera 9 (Windows and Mac)

  1. Find the Tools menu (Windows) or the Opera menu (Mac).
  2. Select Quick preferences. This opens a submenu.
  3. Make sure Enable cookies is ticked (if it is, don't select it as that will un-tick it!)
  4. That's all!
